Blood Testing and Hair Loss

Blood tests are useful indicators about your general health condition, and is used by trichologists to review alongside your symptoms.
Your medical practitioner will review your bloods to assess your general health and wellbeing, whereas a trichologist will consider your blood results slightly differently to assess if they are at an optimum level for your hair and scalp health.
From a trichological perspective, blood tests offer a helpful baseline before embarking on any treatment options. They can also help detect potential health issues early on allowing for early intervention. Blood results can alter over time with or without treatment. The results may indicate underlying imbalances that may be affecting hair and scalp health and directly impacting the hair growth cycle. Hair is a non-essential tissue so when the body is under stress or lacking key nutrients it is often one of the first areas to be affected.
Regular blood tests offer several benefits including early detection, monitoring chronic conditions, and help inform how you can manage your lifestyle.
The RCC blood test helps contribute towards recommending a personalised treatment plan. This is considered alongside any medical health conditions currently being managed and also clinical studies that have been undertaken on the hair and scalp condition you have been diagnosed, thus, offering insights into the effectiveness of various treatments.
Root Cause Clinical offers a bespoke blood test for hair and scalp health through our laboratory partner, Randox, who have several clinics across the UK – CLICK HERE TO SEE YOUR CLOSEST CLINIC.

Remember, your blood test is a snapshot of your blood at that moment as your levels fluctuate throughout the day and week. Your blood results can be affected by stress, medication, supplementation, ill health, sleep deprivation and of course your nutritional composition.
On the day your blood is drawn, try booking for a morning appointment, and fast beforehand for 12 hours (remember drinking water is encouraged, but not alcohol or caffeine). It is also recommended not to smoke or exercise immediately beforehand. Stop any vitamin and mineral supplementation at least 48 hours prior to testing but ideally one week. This is to offer us a helpful baseline result.
Please do not stop any medication that you are taking for general health conditions such as thyroid tablets.
Your appointment on average should take around 20 minutes.
If you do not have any up-to-date blood test results, we would recommend you consider this when you are booking an Initial Consultation with us.
The RCC blood test is a helpful complement to the RCC Genetic Consultation which offers you an insight into what nutrients (vitamins, minerals) you may be predisposed to being deficient. The genetic consultation is recommended following a professional diagnosis (usually during your initial consultation).
Remember, we always encourage a holistic approach to your hair and scalp health. Working with a nutritional therapist would be useful if you are unsure how you can increase certain nutrients into your diet. Supplements should never be your initial protocol.
Our trichologists will only be considering your blood results from a hair health perspective so this is not used as a substitute for your general wellbeing. Please discuss general health concerns with your medical practice.
If you would like to book a consultation with us and would also like to order a Root Cause Clinical Blood Test simply book your consultation two weeks in advance and when processing add ‘Request RCC Blood Test’ to the comment box. We will send through instructions and you can organise your blood test immediately.
