What are Trichologists and how can they help me?

In this article, Wil Fleeson Co-founder of Root Cause Clinical and Registered Consultant Trichologist will help enlighten you about the very important role of trichology in our lives and how it can help you.
Trichology is the science of hair, hair loss and scalp health, by specifically understanding the pathology, anatomy and physiology of hair follicles, and scalp.
As professional and qualified trichologists, we are educated in the science of hair. We also study biological systems, such as the endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, digestive and integumentary systems.
Following our studies, we sit a registered governance recognised exam as well as ongoing assessments to receive our level 4 accreditation in Trichology.
So why do we as trichologists study these specific subjects?
To answer this question, we need to think about what can affect our hair follicles triggering conditions such as alopecia, hair thinning or shedding hair, and what can affect the scalp to create an onset of conditions, such as itchy scalp dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis.
In our experience, a person experiencing hair loss or scalp dandruff, will be given conditional names, such as telogen effluvium or scalp psoriasis, for example.
However, these conditions are often only a side-effect to something within our body’s biology, which can often easily be out of balance or not working effectively.
By studying the biological systems that commonly affect hair growth and scalp health, a qualified trichologist can accurately properly investigate what is the root cause of the symptoms that are experienced by their clients.
Who experiences hair loss and scalp issues?
Research suggests that over 50% of men and women worldwide will experience hair-loss, and as many as 3% of the world’s population will be diagnosed with the condition scalp psoriasis.
‘Having the ability to deliver an accurate diagnosis is essential to creating an effective and lasting treatment pathway.’ says Wil
This is why trichologists with our knowledge and expertise in diagnosing and treating hair and scalp concerns are here to help you understand what is causing the issues with hair growth or scalp health, why this is happening and how it can be treated.
The emotional impact of hair loss and scalp health issues
Wil notes ‘alongside a diagnosis, I find it of utmost importance to explain how trichologists like myself also completely understand the emotional impact hair and scalp problems can cause for people experiencing them.’
With this understanding Root Cause Clinical treat our clients with care and empathy, as often, by the time a client meets their trichologist, they have been on a physical and emotional journey lasting several months or even years, impacting self-confidence and often triggering a considerable amount of anxiety.
You can rest assured all Root Cause Clinical trichologists are fully qualified to level four and meet the highest standards required to diagnose and create Hair Loss & Scalp Health treatment pathways for all our clients.
